Week 1

Orientation

06.09 - 14.09

We devoted the first week to orientation – an encounter with the city of Porto, its history and urban evolution, its present state and plans for the future, all through walks, lectures and presentations given by an array of experts. At the same time, we got ourselves acquainted with our task and our site at the Fontinha Block in Baixa (downtown).

In the first half of the week we were given two major tasks, aimed at understanding the scale of the city, and understanding the scale of the block. In the second half of the week we engaged in a marathon of researching the block.

We divided to 3 groups conducting research in 4 categories -

Historic analysis, Periphery and transportationTopography and Programmatic research.

A special emphasis was given to quickly and effectively organizing the vast amount of material that resulted from our research into clear documents. After only 4 days of intense urban research we presented our finding to the review of Mr. Pedro Baganha, City Canceler.

first Task-

Urban Sections

Our Urban Sections were made after exploring a given walking route, which started from the heart of the old city center and moved towards the newer neighborhoods in the periphery of the city. The media of the sections enabled us to discover certain changes in the area, changes in terms of density, Building typology, urban scale, depth of view, built and un-built and more. While working on our first task, we got the chance to explore and learn about the city of Porto.

Historical analysis

The historic analyzing started from the first significant attempt of flourishing the block and shaping the block function.

The research was mirrored by two parallel scales, the first one was the urbanism system of the whole block, and the second one was the specific scale of the main building, the factory. Moreover, the architectural evolving of the block was exhibited via the architectural, economical, and functional unfolding phases of the factory. Summarizing the historic analyzing display a several attempts of reshaping the function of the block based on two different scales placed on different jumps in an ultimate timeline.

Topographic analysis

We tried to bring the complex topography data from the site to an analyzed and precise documents. Using Central sections of the block and exposing the different layers of the landscapes. The fiscal actions split up to two strategies; A model of the existing topography on a scale of 1:500 and by series of abstract models to examine the paths and the progression movements that they'r create and the surfaces in-between them.

Programmatic analysis

Programmatic division is build on the urban research that allowed us to express which qualities exists in the area that we can build up on, as the social factory. On the other hand it clarified the needs of the area.

We decided to pick up the qualities of the social factory to create a communal fabric distributed over the area creating a network that works together. It includes public facilities as well as potential residential plots. We focused on connections between the public programs themselves, but primarily on their meaning and potential for the area.
